Peru has an area of 1´285´216 square kilometers. It is the third largest country iin South America, behind only Brazil and Aregentina. It is also considered as tropical country. The country has three well-defined regions: a narrow coastal strip, the wider zone of the Amdes Mountains and the Amazon jungle.
The population of Peru, more than 28 million people, os of multiethnic origin, a mixture of the sizeable indigenous population and people fron Europe, Africa and Asia.
Its blend of culture traditions is the result of wide diversity in fields such as the arts, literature, music and gastonomy. The country´s principal language is spanish, though a significant number of peruvians speak indigenous languages - speakers of Quechua and Aymara are most numerous.
Its principal economic activities include agriculture, fishing, mining and manufacturing of products such as textiles.
Politically, Peru is a democratic republic with a president and a multi-party political system built around the separation of powers and decentralitation.
